Felicity Jones Describes Rogue One Character As Blend of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo

When Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters in just over two weeks, fans will be introduced to a whole new group of Rebels hoping to fight the Empire and save the day. An eclectic mix that includes a former Imperial, a Clone Wars veteran, a blind Force-worshipper and more, the team is led by a young woman named Jyn Erso.

Played by actress Felicity Jones, Jyn Erso is a bit of the reluctant hero. She's recruited into the Rebel Alliance not necessarily because of any special skills, the trailers tell us, but because of her bloodline. Her father, Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), is the weapons designer of the Empire's most powerful device, the Death Star, and it seems he's let a coded transmission fly towards the Rebel Alliance for help in stopping its use.

But none of that tells us much about Jyn herself. While we see her as a small child in the pages of the prequel novel Catalyst, her scenes of dialogue in the trailers give us a tiny bit of insight to her character: she's a little brash, very straight-forward, but she knows how to inspire and seems to genuinely believe in something. What does Jones see when she looks at Jyn Erso in the mirror?

"A rather beautiful blend of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo," she told ABC News. "The opportunity to play someone determined, who's trying to find her skills as a leader, to be in a fantasy movie, to be able to do a leading female role in a film of that scale – that's very, very rare."

The description is an interesting one, and one you can see from just the trailers - she's roguish and (over) confident like Han Solo, but she's also faithful and hopeful like Luke Skywalker. She's willing to go by instinct on her own, and, it appears, learns to trust others, as well. That should make her relatable, and easy to see how she fits amongst the pantheon of beloved Star Wars characters.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue Onetells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
