Countless fans pore over every detail, question every scene, and dissect every line of dialogue whenever a new Star Wars film releases. It happened after Empire Strikes Back, then again after every prequel film, and the process kicked up again when The Force Awakens hit theaters.
And though people question Rey’s parentage, what drove Kylo Ren to the Dark Side, or why Luke is in hiding, one aspect has driven a lot of speculation for fans of two new characters in the Star Wars Universe.
Specifically, are Finn and Poe Dameron going to hook up?
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy acknowledged that she’s aware of the fan theory and campaign to put the Resistance X-Wing pilot in a relationship with the First Order deserter, among others.
Unfortunately, don’t expect to see it happen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but Kennedy did not rule it out from happening eventually, according to Spanish outlet E·Cartelera.
The translation of her quote (via Hitfix) states: “We've talked about it, but I think you're not going to see it in The Last Jedi,” Kennedy said with a laugh.
The report also contains a quote where Kennedy states that they actually take a lot of fan observations and theories into account:
After 40 years of adventures people have a lot of information and a lot of theories about the paths these stories can take, and sometimes those theories that come up are new ideas for us to listen to, read, and pay attention to. It’s clear that the fans are as much masters of this franchise as we are.
She's not ruling out that Oscar Isaac's and John Boyega's characters won’t be a couple in the future installments, just that we shouldn’t expect to see it until maybe Star Wars: Episode IX. On-screen Star Wars canon has yet to prominently feature a same-sex couple, so the development would be a welcome moment of inclusion.
`Til then, expect more cute moments in The Last Jedi like Finn totally stealing Poe’s clothes. After all, the jacket does suit him.
