'Doctor Who' Christmas Special Will Screen In Theaters

Peter Capaldi’s final bow as the Doctor and Jodie Whitaker’s introduction will take place in theaters across the United States for one night only.

Fathom Events has announced that this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, “Twice Upon a Time,” will screen in theaters on Wednesday, December 27th at 7 p.m. Local time.

The screening will be followed by two exclusive behind-the-scenes features that will show how this year’s Christmas Special was made and celebrate outgoing star Peter Capaldi and outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat.

The Christmas Special features David Bradley in the role of the First Doctor, originally played by the late William Hartnell. Pearl Mackie will also return for her final performance as the Twelfth Doctor’s companion Bill Pott, and Mark Gatiss will also guest star.

“’Twice Upon a Time’ will mark the 16th cinema event we have presented in partnership with BBC Worldwide North America,” Fathom Events VP of Programming Kymberli Frueh said in a statement (via EW). “Our Doctor Who events are the perfect opportunities for Whovians to meet up, giving them a chance to enjoy their favorite content together in a big screen setting.”

“The regeneration of the Doctor is a must-see event for Doctor Who fans around the world,” said Sergei Kuharsky, EVP Franchise and Digital Enterprises, BBC Worldwide North America. “And who wouldn’t want to watch the historic emergence of Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor on the big screen?”

Jodie Whitaker will make history when she debuts as the Thirteenth Doctor and the first female Doctor in Doctor Who's history. She will take over as the series lead in the show's eleventh season, which will also be the first season for new series showrunner Chris Chibnall, who was one of the main writers on the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood. The companion for the Thirteenth Doctor hasn't been announced as of yet.

Tickets for the Doctor Who: Twice Upon a Time screenings are now on sale.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special airs December 25, 2017, on BBC America.
