Is Betty Cooper ever going to catch a break?!

During the Riverdale midseason finale last week, Betty helped unmask and seemingly put an end to the Black Hood, saving the town from his evil. However the final shot of the episode revealed that Betty still had a lot of darkness left to deal with.

Not only does the embattled girl next door have a lot of internal struggles to work through when the series returned, but showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has revealed that the twisted roots of her family tree will continue to strangle and haunt her as Season 2 continues.

"I think Betty's big series arc will always be kind of relate back to the kind of darkness within her," Aguirre-Sacasa told ComicBook.com. "I think she's always trying to figure out where that comes from and I think one of the theories is that she inherited it from her family. So I think that that's a story that we'll always be telling with Betty, some version of it. So yeah, we're going to explore that for sure in the second half of the season, and yeah Betty's family will absolutely kind of be front and center for her for a bit."

As Riverdale fans know, this includes the arrival of Betty's brother Chic to the series. Hart Denton was tapped to play Chic Cooper in the back half of Season 2 and, save for one shot in the latest Riverdale promo, the circumstances surrounding his arrival to town are being kept under lock and key. Aguirre-Sacasa wanted keep it that way.

"Just watch," the producer said of Chic's debut. "I'll tell you what, he doesn't come in with a whimper, I'll tell you that much."

We'd expect nothing less, Roberto.

Riverdale returns to The CW on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 8pm ET.
