The 5 Best Stories In Comics This Week

With so many new comics hitting the shelves every Wednesday, it's easy to miss some of the smaller happenings throughout the week. Once the weekend comes it feels like you finally have a chance to catch up, so why not make it a little easier to find the highlights from the industry in one place?

Sounds good right? Whether it's Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, BOOM!, Titan, Oni Press, or industry related, this is a one-stop spot for what went on in comics this week. There's plenty more that happened of course, and you can always check out the CB Comics hub to find more. If you're in a hurry though you can hit the next slide to get the cliff notes version.

Before you go though there is one more item that deserves a second look this week. Marvel revealed their first look at their new crossover event Weapons of Mutant Destruction. The storyline will bring together the new Weapon X team and pair them with the Totally Awesome Hulk, and writer Greg Pak can't wait to see them all clash.

"The heroes and villains who have come together to battle the new Weapon X include some of Marvel's most ruthless killers, trackers, and hand-to-hand combatants with Logan, Sabretooth, Domino, Warpath, and Lady Deathstrike," said series writer Greg Pak. "But to stop Weapon X, our team needs the brains and brawn of Amadeus Cho, a.k.a. the Totally Awesome Hulk. The trick is that Amadeus's cocky optimism might put him on a collision course with his own ruthless teammates. The sheer visceral fun comes from the massive mayhem of the world's most lethal X-Men cutting loose alongside the Hulk with the fate of all mutantkind is in the balance."

Secret Empire: The Return Of Steve Rogers?

Secret Empire has been full of surprises thus far. Regardless, few expected the last page of issue #2, a page that kicked multiple theories into gear. A man claiming to be Steve Rogers rescues a woman from several superpowered thugs, and he certainly looks the part.

As for those theories, it could be his mind simply fighting the regenerated memories from Kobik, but that doesn't seem likely. It could also be the ultimate universe's Captain America somehow making his way to this world. It could also be neither of those options, and it appears fans will have to wait until issue #3 to find out more. You can read more and see the spoiler images here.

The Return Of Jay Garrick

The final issue of "The Button" held a number of key details for the DC Universe's future, but it also held a big return from a fan favorite. That fan favorite is none other than Jay Garrick, who is revealed to be stuck in the speed force.

Garrick is in the same predicament that Wally was in back in the DC Rebirth Universe Special, and it took his connection with Barry Allen to get him out. Garrick will likely need to find a similar object or person in this world to trigger his release from the speed force, but fans were still happy to see that a full return is in the offing. Doomsday Clock Series Announced

Earlier in the week DC announced the next big entry in its Watchmen storyline, which will be a much anticipated series titled Doomsday Clock. The series has some A+ talent attached, with Geoff Johns, Gary Frank, and Brad Anderson all working on the project.

Doomsday Clock doesn't hit until November, but DC provided a small glimpse of the idea in this week's The Flash #23. The two page epilogue shows the Comedian's blood spattered button, followed by what turns out to be Superman's iconic symbol. The ideals represented in both of those symbols will be at odds during the upcoming series, and this is but just a taste of what is to come. You can find out more about the epilogue here.

Captain America's Full Hydra Costume Revealed

So far in Secret Empire, Captain America's methods have undergone drastic changes, but his costume has stayed the same. In the Secret Empire #0 cover, fans could see the hint at his full Hydra gear underneath his regular costume, but in the full reveal for Secret Empire #10, the full costume has finally been revealed.

Standing in stark contrast to the traditional look, this costume is full-on green and gold. The suit is much more armored than the previous costume, though his central star is still highly visible on his chest and shield. It's certainly a more imposing look, and you can view the full cover and more details here.

The X-Men Face New Sentinels

The X-Men just can't catch a break sometimes, even when they're trying to be proactive about protecting the civilian population. Such is the case with Gambit in this week's X-Men Gold #4, where he retrieves a prized piece of technology for a client in an effort to find out why she wants it. When he finds it's for someone related to the dreaded Bolivar Trask, he attempts to recover it, but as with most things involving the X-Men, things don't go as planned. The result is an even deadlier version of their trademark adversary, and this one might just be too much to handle. You can find out more about the new Sentinel here.
