Leave it to everyone's favorite card-throwing Cajun to unearth a new technology that if in the wrong hands could mean bad things for mutantkind. It's even more like Gambit to make that situation even worse.
Spoilers incoming for X-Men: Gold #4, so if you haven't read it yet you've been warned.
Gambit hasn't been around his fellow mutants at the X-compound lately, mostly because he's been doing some light-thieving for a new client. Things go rather swimmingly during the actual theft, but not so much during the delivery. When Gambit asks about the item he stole, his client tells him it's an extensive collection of nanites. They're self-repairing and are "smart swarm" ready she tells him, and all they need is an A.I. to guide them. Gambit's client? That would be Olivia Trask, granddaughter of none other than Bolivar Trask, inventor of the mutant-hunting Sentinels that have chased the X-Men constantly over the years.
In trying to get the nanites out of her hands, Gambit, unfortunately, makes things worse. In the ensuing firefight, the vial holding the nanites breaks, and they immediately seek out a computer system to interface with. The result is a brand new type of sentinel, and this one is essentially sentient while also able to repair itself. It makes the giant purple clunkers of yesteryear look like household appliances in comparison, and hopefully, the X-Men can find a way to keep the number from multiplying. The Sentinels have taken on many forms over the years, even some that have been able to withstand their powers and heal themselves. They've never fought Sentinels though who were able to think for themselves, and that could be the biggest obstacle in their path.
At least Gambit will have some help in trying to get the genie back in the bottle, as by issue's end Kitty Pryde, Prestige, Nightcrawler, and Colossus are heading in to give him a hand, and hopefully, before he falls off the literal ledge. You can see what the Sentinel looks like in the gallery.
