The Martian Scores $2.5 Million Opening Night Box Office

Ridley Scott's The Martian brought in $2.5 million in its Thursday night premiere. That's the highest grossing Thursday debut since Straight Outta Compton grossed $4.9 million in August.

Based on the Andy Weir novel, The Martian is a 3D film that stars Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on mars and trying to survive long enough for a rescue mission to reach him.

The Martian received strong reviews when it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. It's estimated to make $40-45 million in its opening weekend. It's unclear if the Hurricane Joaquin will effect this projection.
