Director Coulson himself, Clark Gregg, was a guest on the inaugural edition of Marvel's new "This Week in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." podcast, where he spoke about this week's Season 2 premiere episode, "Shadows."

Spoiler warning for those that haven't watched the episode yet.

As part of the podcast, Gregg spoke to the episodes surprising death of Izzy Hartley, played by series newcomer Lucy Lawless, saying that he didn't want to see Lawless leave so soon.

"I was shocked at the table read," says Gregg. "I stopped, and I said 'you cannot do this, we just got her!' It's a brilliant choice, I don't think anyone saw it coming."

Of course, Phil Coulson is the poster boy for how fickle mortality can be when you're dealing with a superhero universe, a fact that Gregg acknowledges.

"Although, who knows? It's Marvel, and I'm here to tell you that you can only be so dead," he says.

Lawless herself has acknowledged that the door is left open for her character to return in her own interviews.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
