HBO's ultra successful Game of Thrones is setting to start its sixth season, but there is already talk of a seventh and eighth season being much shorter, splitting 13 episodes amongst the two.
It's just early talk, and nothing concrete has been confirmed, but when a series nears its end, studios often look for opportunities to spin it off in some way. Shows like Fear The Walking Dead, SHIELD: Most Wanted, and Better Call Saul have spawned from this process, but for HBO that doesn't seem to be in the plans.
"No," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo tells EW. "If that were to happen it would have to come from [Benioff and Weiss] really feeling something, or [author George R.R. Martin] really feeling that it was the right thing to do. Not knowing how this particular story ends, I don't know. There are plenty of characters, secondary characters, [that] you could build a world around. We're always going to be drawn to a strong creative vision. But we are not going to do that unless we feel their passion."
Lombardo didn't rule it out completely, but at the moment, there isn't anything that sticks out to them as a storyline that must continue.
"No, we don't talk about that stuff," showrunner Dan Weiss tells EW. "The job at hand is too enormous and challenging to be further diffusing ourselves by thinking about spin-offs, and theme park rides, and ice ballets … but if anybody has a good pitch for a good Game of Thrones ice ballet, let us know."
All this talk is for the future, though, so until then fans get to experience all the joy and sorrow of season 6, which starts on April 24th.
