James Gunn Cap America 2

James Gunn just posted a big I told you so on his Facebook page.

The Guardian's of the Galaxy Director posted a rather lengthy opinion to the recently released Steve Rogers Captain America #2. For those who weren't aware of it, the first issue caused quite a stir amongst longtime fans for its opening story of Cap actually being a Hydra agent since he was young, as revealed in the final page of the issue. Spoilers from here on out for issue #2 by the way.

Pockets of fans lost their minds a bit, decrying Marvel, Nick Spencer, and Jesus Saiz for corrupting the legacy of an icon, and claiming ridiculous things like the book was anti-Semitic. For those people, issue #2 is probably a relief, as it is revealed to be all a plan masterminded by the Red Skull, but Gunn wasn't about to let those people off the hook quite so easily. Instead, the director had a few choice words.

"Shocking. Now that the twist is EXACTLY the twist Simon and Kirby had in one of their own, original stories, does it STILL destroy their legacy, as so many claimed? Do I still have to read the blog about the girl whose boyfriend is on the brink of suicide due to the loss of his idol, or is he all better now? Are Marvel all still racists? DOES MY CAT STILL NEED TO BE STUFFED IN A WOODCHIPPER, not because I supported the twist, but because I said people were overreacting to that twist?"

He went on to spell out that this is indeed comics, where the dead never stay dead and characters are in a constant state of fluidity, melding and adapting to the times. All in all the point seemed to be it's not that serious.

"All of this is just to say let's try and hold back for at least a few seconds with the anti-Semitic accusations the next time around. And let's make the bar for life-ruiners a little higher. And, no matter what, leave my cat out of it."

It's an entertaining post, which you can read in full above.

Steve Rogers Captain America #2 is in stores today.
