The Marvel cinematic universe is coming very close to introducing the full set of Infinity Stones, but don't expect the set to be completed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Director James Gunn has confirmed that there are no Infinity Stones in the space-faring sequel.

"There will be no Infinity Stones in Vol. 2.," Gunn said plainly in response to a question about the Stones on Facebook.

The original Guardians of the Galaxy featured the Power Stone, which was the fourth Infinity Stone to appear on the big screen. The Space Stone is concealed within the Tesseract, first introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger and seen again in The Avengers. The Mind Stone was first housed inside Loki's scepter but was used to bring the Vision to life in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The Aether from Thor: The Dark World is actually the Reality Stone in liquid form. Finally, the relic known as the Eye of Agamotto, which hangs around the neck Doctor Strange, is believed to house the Time Stone. That only leaves the Soul Stone still unrevealed.

Gunn has previously stated the Infinity Stones would play, at best, a minimal role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but this is the first confirmation that the Stones will be completely absent from the film.

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Check out when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and other movies are coming out in ComicBook.com's Movie Release Schedule.
