Harry Potter And The Cursed Child Sells Over 2 Million Copies In First 2 Days

The industry knew that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child would be a big hit at retail when it finally debuted, and the release has proved pundits correct with a 2 million copy selling spree in North America in just two days of release (via THR).

The numbers are more impressive when you consider that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is not a typical novel release from J.K. Rowling, but rather a script from the actual play, which is currently playing in London. Even with mixed reviews, the book continues to top the bestseller lists on both Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

While you can compare it to the last Harry Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, it wouldn't exactly be a fair fight. That book sold 8.3 million copies in its first day, but it was also an original novel, not to mention the finale to the series.

Since the door has been reopened to the Harry Potter world and its future, many had hoped that another full novel might be coming somewhere down the line, but those fans will be disappointed to learn that for Rowling, Harry's story ends with The Cursed Child.

"He goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we're done. This is the next generation, you know," Rowling tells Reuters. "So, I'm thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now."

"(It) chimed perfectly with the material I had about the next generation and I could see it would work perfectly," she said. "So, I never wanted to write another novel, but this will give the fans something special."
