Do good guys really finish last? Well, when it comes to box office numbers, then the answer is yes. Suicide Squad has officially overtaken Captain America: The Winter Soldier at the worldwide box office.

Over the weekend, Suicide Squad rounded out its total global gross with a cool $718+ million. When compared to The Winter Soldier, the newest DC Entertainment flick pulls ahead of its competitor's gross of $714+ million.

As far as the domestic box office is concerned, Suicide Squad shut down The Winter Soldier ages ago. The super-villain film had already out-grossed the Marvel Studios project by its third week. After raking in more than $260 million domestically, Suicide Squad squashed The Winter Soldier and its total run of $259 million. Suicide Squad's domestic total now stands at $313 million.

For many DC die-hards, the triumph of Suicide Squad is one to celebrate. The film opened to some intense backlash as critics panned the film. Citing its erratic characterization, industry insiders questioned whether Suicide Squad would follow in the footsteps of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After all, Zack Snyder's superhero film did fail to impress audiences when it debuted earlier this year

However, Suicide Squad proved naysayers wrong week after week with its stellar box office pull. The blockbuster did experience a worrying slump in its second weekend before Suicide Squad leveled out, allowing the film to gross over $600 million by the end of August.

The film's lucrative earnings have also pushed Suicide Squad into the Top 100 Highest-Grossing Movies of All Time at the worldwide box office.

Warner Bros. is surely pleased by the film's latest achievement considering Suicide Squad stands as one of the earlier entries of the DC Extended Universe. The next installment will come courtesy of Wonder Woman with Justice League set to follow. Earlier in the year, Batman v Superman did manage to rake in plenty of cash despite its sour reviews as it raked in over $873 million worldwide, so Suicide Squad still has some work to do if it wants to overcome its predecessor.

In Suicide Squad, it feels good to be bad...Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?

This third installment of the DC Extended Universe is written and directed by David Ayer and stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne.
