After a long rest, Joss Whedon seems ready to roll back onto theaters with new projects. The beloved director took a brief hiatus after his last Marvel Studios gig wrapped with Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, Whedon is coming back with a vibrant election PSA campaign and finishing an original screenplay.

And, if fans are lucky, they might see him helm a Star Wars movie in the coming years.

In an interview with Complex, Whedon revealed if he was interested in getting into another franchise. He confessed they were "a fun thing to do" and even clued readers into his love of Star Wars.

"Do I want to make a Star Wars movie? Yeah. I was like, 'I don't want to make a Star Wars movie. Like, god dammit, why?' But I saw the trailer for Rogue awhile ago and I was like, 'I want to do that." he said.

Whedon continued, saying he'd love "to make a Star Wars movie and not be wed to the bigger picture."

If the director isn't game for shooting a standard saga installment for Star Wars, then making a spin-off film would be a great compromise. Whedon would be able to work within canon storylines or create prelude content for fans to fawn over. All this could be done without him necessarily effecting the future direction of Star Wars' currently trilogy, giving Whedon more room for creative licensing.

Of course, nabbing a directorial role with Lucasfilm isn't the easiest thing in the world. If Whedon was interested, he could perhaps find himself helming a live-action TV series set in the Star Wars universe. After all, Disney/ABC executive Ben Sherwood revealed that a small screen adaptation is still possible. While he didn't want to get anyone's hopes high, Sherwood did say both Disney and Lucasfilm "hope in a galaxy not too far away there will be a television show that will air on one of our networks."

Since departing from Marvel Studios, fans have wondered whether Whedon would train himself in the Force and take on a Star Wars project. Sites like Latino Review speculated the director might be tapped for a live-action Star Wars show given his work on shows like Firefly, Angel, and Dollhouse.

There's also the chance that Whedon never enters the Star Wars universe at all. If he doesn't, the director might find himself persuaded back into the arms of Marvel Studios. Whedon told IGN earlier this year that he'd return to the blockbusting studio if he was asked to make a Black Widow movie.

He said, "Well, if somebody pointed at me and said, 'Do you want to make a Black Widow movie,' the answer would be 'duh' for two reasons." He continued and said he'd liked to, "to do a spy-thriller. Like, really do a good, paranoid sort of John le Carré on-crack kind of thing. That would be really fun."

So, what do you think? Would you be interested in seeing Whedon direct a Star Wars film, may it be a spin-off or saga installment? Let us know in the comments below!
