When cast members and producers were just barely starting to hint at the final story arc for Agents of SHIELD's fourth season, there was a common theme in everyone's comments: long-term fans of the show would be rewarded.
When the mid-season cliffhanger ended with Daisy Johnson waking up in the alternate reality of the Framework, viewers received their first taste when they found out that the traitorous Grant Ward was still alive and that HYDRA has taken the place of SHIELD.
That was only the tip of the iceberg, as the episode titled "What If?" kicked off the final pod of Season 4 and revealed a ton of new throwbacks to prior storylines including the first major mystery that drove a lot of Agent Phil Coulson's actions at the beginning of the series.
This wasn't the first time that Coulson received a memory re-write in the series, and Jemma Simmons recalled the famous phrase that was drilled into his brain in an attempt to remind him of who he really is.
"It's a magical place," Simmons says, referencing the TAHITI project that brought Coulson back from the dead.

"There's a glimmer of hope, the fact that T.A.H.I.T.I. and that stuff in his past has interfered with their ability to Framework him," showrunner Jed Whedon said in an interview with EW.
When Agents of SHIELD was first announced, many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were intrigued at the prospect of Phil Coulson being alive. The mystery of Tahiti and constant use of the phrase "it's a magical place" were employed, and it wasn't until the end of the first season when it was revealed that former SHIELD Director Nick Fury put Coulson through an experimental procedure to reverse his death.
Using Kree blood and a brain-rewriting machine, they removed the traumatic experiences of his death and regeneration so that he wouldn't be driven insane like other people who underwent the process.
Simmons and Daisy were able to bring Coulson from under the Framework's control by uttering this phrase. But not everyone else on their team underwent the same experiment as Coulson, so that method will not work again.
"Coulson is unique in the fact that he's had this done to his mind before [with T.A.H.I.T.I.], so that is something they couldn't bank on," Whedon said.
We'll find out how the former Agents of SHIELD cope in the next episode, "Identity and Change."
"Identity and Change": As Daisy and Simmons struggle to discover an escape route to the real world, the identity of the Inhuman leader of the Resistance is revealed.
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Tuesdays at 10p EST.
