If you have been keeping up with Dragon Ball Super, then you know the anime is about to call out Broly in a big way. The Legendary Super Saiyan is one of the franchise's most decisive characters thanks to his insane power levels and non-canon status. For years, fan-wars have been waged over whether the villain should be introduced to Akira Toriyama's take on the canon. Dragon Ball Super isn't about to retcon Broly's controversial past, but it is gearing up to usurp the powerful character. And, in the anime's latest episode, a Broly tie-in helped secure one new character's close relationship to the character.
For some time now, fans have known that Dragon Ball Super was about to introduce a heroine known as Female Broly. The character was shown in the first trailer of the 'Universal Survival' arc, and the 88th episode of Dragon Ball Super finally showed the character. As the sister of a retired Saiyan commander from Universe 6, the girl is described as wild and brash. In fact, her base personality doesn't seem anything like Broly who was one of the more peaceful Saiyans at first. However, she does have something in common with Broly and the rest of the Saiyans.
That's right. Female Broly's real name is based on a vegetable. Dragon Ball Super just confirmed that the female warrior's name is Caulifa, a name sourced from the vegetable 'Cauliflower.' Fans were quick to notice the pun-tastic named continued Toriyama's method of naming Saiyans after vegetables. And, what's more, cauliflower has a very close relationship to broccoli, the vegetable which Broly's name is based on.
Coincidence? Fans think not.
In Dragon Ball Super, fans watched as Cabba attempted to persuade his former Defense Squad captain to join Universe 6's team for the Tournament of Power. When Renso rejected, he suggested Caulifa take his spot. The man said his sister may seem like a thug but that her true potential was more than anyone could imagine. Fans then see the uncouth fighter sitting at a massive table as she viciously eats some meat. Caulifa may be surrounded by goons, but her aura seems far more sinister than any of theirs. So, when the Omni-Kings finally kick off their impending tournament, it would be wise for Goku to watch out for the surprising female Saiyan.
Dragon Ball Super's "Universal Survival" saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
