After her directorial debut, 2003's Monster, was praised by critics and earned Charlize Theron her first and only Oscar, Patty Jenkins let it be known that she had a burning desire to make a superhero film — one in particular. "When I made Monster and they asked me what I wanted to do [next], I immediately said, 'I want to make Wonder Woman," Jenkins told EW. "Everybody knew I wanted to make a superhero movie."

However, before that dream became reality, Jenkins spent the next several years after Monster working in television on Arrested Development, Entourage and The Killing.

In 2011, it appeared that part of Jenkins's dream would come true as Marvel Studios hired her to helm Thor: The Dark World, but she departed the project due to creative differences. "I'm still so grateful to those guys for hiring a woman to direct f—ng Thor," Jenkins said of Marvel. "Why would you do that? You don't have to do that."

In 2014, when Warner Bros. was on the hunt for a Wonder Woman director, Jenkins was among those on the studio's short list, but it was Game of Thrones alum Michelle MacLaren that was initially chosen. However, MacLaren would exit the project because of "creative differences." Jenkins was then offered the gig and took it once she knew the studio shared her vision for Wonder Woman.

And what was that vision? Jenkins wanted to tell a straight-forward origin tale, framed by a Wonder Woman and Steven Trevor love story.

"I didn't want to do anything more complicated," Jenkins offered. "From my point of view, this was the movie I was talking to them about for about eight or nine years. I've met with 10 different people at Warner Bros and then it all came together in this one moment."

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Joining Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. Patty Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.

The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, Wonder Woman.

Set to open in June 2, 2017, the Wonder Woman feature film is based on characters created by William Moulton Marston, appearing in comic books published by DC Entertainment.
