Hailee Steinfeld Wants To Play Batgirl

DC's upcoming Batgirl movie is still in development, meaning that everyone has their own list of "fan casts" for who should ultimately play the part. And now Pitch Perfect star Hailee Steinfeld is willing to throw herself in the running.

During a recent interview with MTV International, Steinfeld was asked about the possibility of her playing the DC Extended Universe's Barbara Gordon. The actress and singer seemed very flattered by the possibility, and said that she'd love to play that role.

"Thank you!" Steinfeld said. "I'm not going to lie, that's kind of what I was thinking. But I didn't know what to say. I would love that."

While Steinfeld might not be the first person people think of when coming up with Batgirl casting, her filmography indicates that she'd be a pretty qualified choice. Steinfeld got her big break in 2010's True Grit, which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She since has appeared in an array of genre films, and received awards buzz again for her starring role in The Edge of Seventeen. She's also set to have another franchise under her belt soon, starring in the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.

According to Steinfeld, the possibility of playing a superhero has always interested her, and she'd be willing to play a particular part as early as possible.

"Yes, absolutely." Steinfeld added. "Definitely on my bucket list, so, you know. New year, new me? Let's see what happens."

As of right now, it's a mystery as to who will play the title role in Batgirl. Joss Whedon, who is set to direct and write the upcoming picture, hasn't really discussed the film's casting since April of this year.

"I'm creating this character." Whedon said earlier this year. "I'm in a dialogue with her. We'll see who joins that later on... I think this is somewhere where you go and find Batgirl and then you cast her... I'm not against movie stars. They're great, but you need somebody who's going to be just right. And, in a situation like this, the name carries a lot of weight."

Justice League is now in theaters; Aquaman arrives on December 21, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Wonder Woman 2 on November 1st, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020.
