This morning, Jam City announced that its studio TinyCo will be joining forces with FoxNext Games and iconic cartoonist Matt Groening to produce Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow. Jam City is a company we've learned to love. It's known for taking beloved franchises with world-class characters and creating authentic and inspired mobile games which capture the spirit of the shows or series upon which they're based.
Groening himself has been a collaborating partner in this project, along with original Futurama writers, Executive Producer David X. Cohen and Rough Draft Studios, and together they've produced this first teaser trailer, which is actually the first new animation from the Futurama universe since the show ended in 2013. Jam City and TinyCo revealed that they will remain in collaboration with these talented teams to bring even more original animation to the game when it launches.
“I’m proud to say that Futurama lives! In mobile-video-game teaser trailer form, anyway,” Groening said. “If you squint, it's kind of like a little episode!”
“Working on this new Futurama animation has been a thrilling adventure,” said David X. Cohen. “I finally understand how Neil Armstrong must have felt when he first landed on the lunar surface, watched some funny cartoons on the control screen, and did whatever else was on his schedule that day.”
According to the press release, Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow will blend simulation, combat, galactic exploration, and choose-your-own-adventure mechanics to bring a fresh gameplay experience to players and fans. There will be two main settings: New New York, and "space adventures." Both settings will feature unique missions and gameplay experiences.
"In New New York, players will focus on rescuing characters, collecting special items and materials, expanding their characters’ capabilities by leveling them up and crafting ability-defining character outfits, and tackling story-driven quests. Events that occur in New New York will often move the game’s overarching narrative forward, by allowing players to assemble a crew of their favorite FUTURAMA characters and take to the stars for Space Adventures. While traversing the depths of space, players will fight alien enemies in retro arcade-style combat, rendered in beautiful 16-bit graphics, and explore strange lands in which their choices determine their fate."
We don't have an official release date yet, but Jam City is promising that Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow will be coming soon to the iOS App Store, Google Play Store, and Amazon Underground store. Keep your eyes and ears peeled. In the meantime, feel free to check out a few more in-game screenshots in the gallery below!
