The gyms found in Pokemon Go recently received quite the overhaul, and one of the biggest changes is that players can now obtain items from visiting gyms, much like they can from visiting PokeStops. These items are obtainable by spinning a photo disc that sits atop the gyms, found in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen when looking at the gym, and you'll be gifted with a couple of takeaways just for visiting.

But one thing that sets the gyms apart further from the PokeStops aside from the battling that'll be going on within them is that players will be rewarded with better and greater quantities of items if they pay more attention to their gyms and visit them more often.

There seems to be a bit of variance when it comes to obtaining the default number of items that Trainers can receive from a gym, but it looks like it's always 2-3 items that can be expected from visiting the gym and spinning the disc with the items having a 5-minute cooldown period. Aside from the default rewards, there are a couple of ways that players can work to guarantee they rake in better loot.

If your chosen team is one of the ones that control a gym in your area, you can expect to receive a bonus item for visiting that location. Team bonuses grant one extra item on top of the default count, something that adds an incentive to working together as a team instead of working individually to take down and maintain gyms.

One of the best ways to net more items is using by upgrading your gym badge, a new system that allows players to obtain badges from each individual gym. These badges can be upgraded by performing several different actions such as feeding berries to your gym's Pokemon, winning battles against opponents that control the gym, and how long you can hold onto a gym. It looks like battling gym opponents is the quickest way to level up your badge, something that's not surprising given that the gyms are all about fighting. The gym badge levels go from bronze to gold with bronze granting you an additional item, silver granting you two, and gold, presumably, giving you three extra items.

With the chance to earn more items from these gyms, it's no wonder that the Pokemon Go team felt that now would be an excellent time to increase the max storage capacity for items so that you can carry all of your newly acquired loot.
