The writing was written on the wall long ago that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would surpass the surprising box office numbers of its predecessor, but now it's looking like the Marvel Studios breakout might be dethrone their earth-based franchise.
James Gunn's cosmic sequel already had an amazing opening weekend in the international markets and looks to build off of that momentum when it opens domestically, where advanced ticket sales are already beating Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has been the number one ticket seller on Fandango every day since it went on sale and has surpassed the advance sales of the Avengers sequel, according to Deadline.
Could the latest Guardians movie beat out its fellow Marvel Studios sequel, which was the fourth best domestic opening in history with $191.3 million? It's certainly a possibility.
"Its popularity has grown exponentially since the first Guardians of the Galaxy surprised audiences as a monster hit," Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis said to Deadline. "The series' visual inventiveness, coupled with the addition of Baby Groot and another fantastic soundtrack in Vol. 2, is fueling even more excitement as Marvel Studios looks to kick off the summer movie season in a massive way."

The Marvel magic doesn't appear to be dissipating any time soon and with word that James Gunn is returning for a third film in the series, that momentum will continue to build. Who knows what estimates will be for Avengers: Infinity War, which will bring both the Guardians of the Galaxy and Earth's Mightiest Heroes together for one film.
The Marvel brand is stronger than ever, allowing the company to take more risks and build new franchises in the face of expiring contracts. While we might be seeing the end of an era with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth, a new era lead by Chris Pratt might just be beginning.
