Adam Driver's performance as Kylo Ren, and the character of Kylo Ren himself, are two of the most divisive things about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fans seemed to either completely love both of those things or completely hate both of those things, with basically nothing in-between. Well... how would fans have enjoyed Eddie Redmayne as the character? It could've happened, if it wasn't for his awful audition.

"I was going for, I think, for Adam Driver['s role]," Redmayne recalled to Uproxx in a recent interview during his press tour for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. "They gave me like a Star Trekscene – or like something from Pride and Prejudice. It was one of those films. With films that top secret, they don't give you the actual lines. So they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you're auditioning for the baddie. If you're me, you then put some ridiculous voice on."

Yes, Redmayne auditioned for the role of Kylo Ren, and he did it in a self-professed terrible fashion, trying to emulate Darth Vader's one-of-a-kind sound.

"That was really a hilarious moment. Because it was Nina Gold, who I have to thank a lot because she's cast me in several films. And she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of 'koohh paaaah' [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice. And after like ten shots she's like, 'You got anything else?' I was like, 'No.'"

Probably not quite what they were going for, Mr. Redmayne.

It all seems to have worked out for Redmayne, who has had a tremendous last few years of his career. He won the Best Actor Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for The Theory of Everything, and followed that up with a second nomination the following year for The Danish Girl. Now, he's nabbed the lead role in the next Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which was recently expanded from three films to five.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them expands J.K. Rowling's wizarding world, rewinding to the past adventures of Newt Scamander (Redmayne), as he chronicles and captures the Fantastic Beasts of the U.S.

Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, will next be seen on the big screen in Star Wars: Episode VIII, due in theaters December 15, 2017 and currently in post-production.
