When the first Force Friday event in 2015 brought the release of new merchandise for the first Star Wars film in a decade, fans went crazy. Excitement for the new characters rocketed and everyone was making their allegiances with little but a trailer to go off of.
One of the most popular characters, Captain Phasma, had a slick design that seemed to promise Gwendoline Christie would be one of the biggest bad asses in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens. Well…
Unfortunately, it didn’t work out quite like that. She had more speaking lines than Boba Fett, sure, but she didn’t really do much aside from bark orders at FN-2187 and get thrown in a garbage compactor (off screen). Then the Starkiller base blew up, leaving little room for the Stormtrooper commander to do much else.
But Christie is returning for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, giving Phasma fans another chance to see the chrome trooper in all of her deserved glory. However, her appearance begs a question of how she escaped certain death after the destruction of the Starkiller.
A new comic series announced at Star Wars Celebration will answer that question, as a part of the Journey To Star Wars: The Last Jedi storytelling banner.
The Captain Phasma comic book will be a 4-issue series drawn by Marco Checchetto and written by Kelly Thomas for Marvel.
The series will detail how Phasma found her way out of the bowels of Starkiller Base and returned to the First Order after the devastating military defeat at the hands of the Resistance. Maybe we’ll get a better glimpse at the true size of the First Order’s capabilities and how they regroup after the blow.
Check out Paul Renaud’s cover for the comic, with the first issue releasing this September.
