Of all the debates that run through the world of science fiction, few are as old as the debate over which series is better, Star Wars or Star Trek. Based on a recent sketch on Conan, one of the show's producers has made it quite clear which side of the fence he stands on, having gone on a six-minute rant about why Star Wars reigns supreme. You can check out the tirade below.
With there clearly being no definitive answer on the matter and the above performance being part of a comedy sketch show, the producer does manage to illustrate some of the points that so many fans agree with.
A big differentiation between the two series is that, while they are both often referred to as "science fiction," a more apt name for Star Wars would be "science fantasy."
In Star Trek, everything that the characters encounter
Star Wars, on the other hand, rules out the possibilities of this reality actually existing in the opening moments, proclaiming that the events of the film took place "a long time ago" in a "galaxy far, far away." Additionally, the saga relies heavily on the concept of "The Force," an all encompassing energy that often exceeds well beyond the realms of science.
Whichever series you prefer, the above video is well worth watching, as it combines the best of both worlds.
