The Force is strong with Dwayne Johnson, but not quite strong enough.

After putting up a good fight on New Year's weekend, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was narrowly defeated at the box office by the Disney's December juggernaut, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The Jumanji sequel boasted an impressive $66.5 million at the domestic box office over the four-day, New Year's weekend. The Last Jedi however, in its third weekend, came out on top, earning $68.3 million. That dominance boosted the ninth Star Wars film to over $1 billion at the global box office, giving Disney another monster year.

Despite the defeat this weekend, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has been a massive overall success for Sony. The sequel was originally projected to earn $45 million in its first six days has skyrocketed to over $185 million in the span of 13 days.

Starring The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan, Welcome to the Jungle is expected to cross $200 million at the box office this weekend, double the amount that the original Robin Williams film earned in 1995.
