What has Castlevania: Lords of Shadow developer MercurySteam been up to for the past few years? Sure, Lords of Shadow 2 had its share of issues, but their previous games were fun, and it would be a shame for them to just fade away like so many other indie devs.

Well, turns out they've been working on Raiders of the Broken Planet, a new cooperative/competitive shooter that appears to take some inspiration from the Borderlands series. Here's how MercurySteam describes their game:

"Players can either join a team as one of four Raiders, enjoying fast paced tactical, cooperative gameplay, or they can choose to fight against them! Don't worry as you won't be alone, you fight along with an AI-controlled army leading the charge against the Raiders. You may be a Raider, but are you a hero or an antagonist? In the world of Raiders of the Broken Planet, it pays to play both sides."

So, as the description says, you can team up with up to three buddies for some co-op action, or you can take control of the game's AI in an interesting asymmetric multiplayer setup. Raiders of the Broken Planet will also have a story-driven side, with MercurySteam promising to deliver four "self-contained" campaigns. The first, entitled Alien Myths, will launch alongside the game, while the rest will be released as DLC.

Think Raiders of the Broken Planet looks promising? Well, you might want to get in on the closed beta, which launches on May 13. You can sign up for that right here.

Raiders of the Broken Planet doesn't have a firm release date yet, but it's expected to launch on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 sometime this year.
