Platinum Games certainly has been busy as of late. Along with bringing hits like Bayonetta and Vanquish to Steam, it’s also announced a two-pack of Bayonetta games for Nintendo Switch, along with the forthcoming Bayonetta 3. But that’s not all, as the company is also working on a few smaller titles – but it has a separate plan in place for them.
While speaking with Game Informer, Atsushi Inaba, who serves as a producer and the head of development for the company, explained that the company is looking into creating its own fresh IP for the new year – and publishing it themselves.
It’s got a number of projects in the works, including “Hollywood IPs” with other big name companies, but it also wants to try its hand at producing and releasing its own games. “One of the things Platinum is focused on is we’re looking into creating our own IP, creating our own game…but we’re becoming more and more interested in the idea of self-publishing and doing our own title.”
That won’t change the fact that the company is still working on big franchises with other publishers, like Bayonetta 3. “First off, we will continue to do AAA games for other publishers and that’s because, again, we don’t have the cash flow to take on the risk to only do self-published games. In order to do a AAA title with that amount of risk, you need to be with a big company, a publisher so to speak.”
So it’s a growing process, it sounds like – but it’s worked for some developers thus far. For instance, Ninja Theory worked on a number of big IP’s over the past few years, including Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey To the West and DmC: Devil May Cry, before it decided to try its luck on its own property, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – and it’s a move that paid off in spades, not only selling enough to make the company successful, but becoming one of 2017’s most noteworthy titles.
