The Marvel Cinematic Universe may like its surprises, but fans can always rest assured that the franchise will include one thing: easter eggs. Ever since Iron Man debuted back in 2008, the folks behind the MCU have made sure to stuff features with geeky, pop culture easter eggs. In recent years, no Marvel movie has turned fans into treasure hunters quite like Guardians of the Galaxy, and audiences expect the film's sequel to revive their sleuthing skills.
However, it seems like some of the new movie's easter eggs were tragically cut from the film. Director James Gunn spoke with Collider about the loss as he admitted a touching scene was ultimately pulled from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - and a lot of easter eggs went with it.
"Unfortunately we had a sort of terrible cutting — one of our scenes we cut was with Grandpa Quill on earth, and we had a lot of Easter Eggs in that scene," Gunn explained.
"As much as we had in the collector's museum, probably more," he continued.
Of course, fans of Guardians of the Galaxy will know that the Collector's Museum housed dozens of easter eggs. The scene is still a favorite for viewers to dig back through, so plenty are surely sad to hear that Gunn's sequel had to cut out so many coveted references. And, to make things even worse, the scene would have given fans an update on how Star-Lord's grandfather has faired since the Ravagers abducted Peter all those years ago.
According to Gunn, the director says he hoped to share a picture of the deleted scene online, but the still may be a long time coming. He went on to say that he doesn't believe the deleted scene will make it to the film's Blu-ray as an extra. In fact, plenty of deleted scenes will be kept away from the public; Gunn said only a few minutes of extra scenes will make it to the Blu-ray even though 13 minutes total were cut from its theatrical run.
