Although anyone could have made an educated guess that we'd get a third installment to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, fans were long unsure if writer/director James Gunn would return to helm the movie.

To put fans at ease just prior to the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Gunn released a heartfelt message to fans revealing that he, in fact, would be back to return to both write and direct the franchise's third movie.

With Vol. 2 taking place just mere weeks after the first film, Gunn has said that the third movie will take place after Avengers: Infinity War. Going by the timeline Gunn has previously laid out, both of the now-released Guardians flicks would have taken place circa 2014, so that leaves the yet-to-be-named third movie taking place several years later.

Gunn's brother Sean — who plays a Ravager named Kraglin in the MCU — sat down with Fan Fest to expand on the timeline of the movies a little further.

"I know that James is being a little bit more patient this time around. Partially because some of what happens with the Guardians is dependent on what happens with them in Infinity War," Sean Gunn reflected. "And even though my brother's a producer on Infinity War, those movies aren't finished yet so until we kind of see where everything lands there that's going to have some bearing on what happens with the Guardians. So it's a little bit of a wait and see but I'm sure there are a lot of ideas already in the works."

Gunn has previously stated on his wildly popular Q&A sessions via Facebook Live that he has already begun penning the script for Guardians 3. With Vol. 2 opening up several doors deep into the cosmic side of the universe shared by the Marvel Studios movies — including the introduction of The Watchers, original Guardians team, and Adam Warlock — it's unlikely we'll get answers to those questions in Infinity War, rather we'll have to wait for Guardians 3.
