Superior Spider-Man, Costume Tweaks Announced

Amazing Spider-Man

writer Dan Slott gave an interview with USA Today this afternoon in which he confirmed that Marvel NOW!'s "Superior" teasers related to Spider-Man. The Superior Spider-Man will launch in 2013, and feature changes made to the character, with slight costume redesigns that make the character appear more insectoid, alien and menacing. "The first story arc is called 'Hero or menace?' I think that pretty much tells you where we're going," said Slott. The writer, who has teased seismic changes to the character and his world with the end of The Amazing Spider-Man with #700, says that while he's still the writer, this won't be the same Spider-Man book in many important respects. "I've always been the omniscient hand that's been protecting Peter Parker and Spider-Man, and not letting anything too bad happen to him," Slott said. "And now I've become this cruel god. There's something exciting about that, about going, 'Mwah-ha-ha-ha-ha, here is what's going to happen to you, Spider-Man!' And it's drastic and it's big and it's exciting and it's never been done before."

"You're getting a new writer on this book," he added, "and his name also happens to be Dan Slott and he is very messed up. I hear this guy wrote Arkham Asylum and Great Lakes Avengers." Ryan Stegman will kick off the series, which he says he's on for the long haul, and draw the first three issues, after which he'll be platooning with Humberto Ramos and Giuseppe Comuncoli. Slott also says that, in addition to more pointed and animalistic fingers and eyes, the Spider-Man costume will disguise a character--who may or may not be Peter Parker--who has some dangerous new powers. "As someone who's been reading Amazing Spider-Man since he was 8 years old, am I sad Amazing's going away? Yeah," the writer says. "But as the guy who pushed down the plunger and blew everything up, I'm like, 'Yeah! Did you see the size of that explosion? That was awesome!'"
