We've already heard from Team Captain America, and now the actors who play Team Iron Man are speaking up about where they stand in Captain America: Civil War.
It should come as no surprise that James Rhodes, Tony's best friend, has defected from Captain America's new Avengers squad to stand at Iron Man's side. Actor Don Cheadle explains that Rhodey's life as the armored superhero War Machine can conflict with his career as a soldier.
"Obviously, I can't do anything that violates my oath, Cheadle tells USA Today, "but at the same time we're dealing with things that haven't ever been in the playbook."
The Vision - a new lifeform born of the merging of J.A.R.V.I.S., Stark's A.I. computer system, and the Mind Infinity Stone hidden in Loki's Scepter in Avengers: Age of Ultron – also stands with Stark. Actor Paul Bettany says Vision is still figuring out his own identity, but makes his decision based on a certain logic.
"The stronger you are, the more you invite challenge," he says. "Something has to rise to fill the vacuum."
According to Scarlett Johansson, Black Widow's decision to join Stark was a deliberately unemotional one. "Either we're going to fight it and lose or we're going to go with it and make it work," Johansson says. "Regimes come and go but we have to pat the backs this time and shake hands and play nice."
Chadwick Boseman will debut as T'Challa, the Black Panther, in Captain America: Civil War. Boseman says T'Challa's decision is politically motivated, and that Black Panther may be a part of Team Stark, but "he's definitely his own guy. There's no 'I'm going to do whatever you say because you're the leader of this team.' That's not who he is. But I would say that's also true of other characters."
As for Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. says, "Regardless of whose argument is what, communication is about really being able to fully see the other person's point of view. I fully see Cap's point of view — I don't know if Tony does."
