The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
is now the highest-grossing film released in 2013, as it passed Iron Man 3 at the domestic box office yesterday. The film to date has generated $409.4 million at the domestic box office, while Iron Man 3 has $409.3 million. Iron Man 3 remains the highest-grossing film of the calendar year, although that's not how the records are generally kept for exactly the reason that Iron Man 3 has over six months to generate revenue in 2014, while The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has done that dollar amount in seven weeks. Obviously, Iron Man 3 did not remain in theaters all year long, but theater attrition is standard in these situations and doesn't figure into measurements of gross. In the international marketplace, Iron Man 3 is still king and unlikely to be deposed; the film has generated over a billion dollars worldwide, while Catching Fire has made less than $850 million so far.
