J.K. Rowling Weighs In On Harry Potter Fan Theory That Dumbledore Is Death

Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has given a certain amount of approval to a popular fan interpretation of her work.

The interpretation first posits that the story of the Three Brothers from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows is an allegory for other characters in the series. The brother who tries to use the Elder Wand to overpower Death is Voldemort. The one who wants the Resurrection Stone to bring back his dead lover is Snape, still regretting his role in Lily Potter's death. The final brother, who hides beneath the Invisibility Cloak before finally greeting Death as an old friend, is Harry himself.

A more recent wrinkle in the theory is the suggestion that Death represents Albus Dumbledore. As Death is the one who gives the Hallows to the Three Brothers in the story, Dumbledore is the one who possesses them in present day. There are also only two things that Voldemort fears, death and Dumbledore. Perhaps he sees the former in the latter?

While not officially weighing in on its canonicity, Rowling said on Twitter that "It's a beautiful theory and it fits."
