The BBC reports that veteran actor/director Richard Attenborough, who won an Academy Award for directing Gandhi and appeared in Jurassic Park, has died.

His son confirmed that he passed away this morning after a long illness; he has been in poor health on and off, and wheelchair-bound, since a fall six years ago, the BBC reports.

During the course of his six-decade career, Attenborough also directed Superman: The Movie's Gene Hackman and The Dark Knight's Michael Caine in the 1977 war drama A Bridge Too Far; and Iron Man's Robert Downey, Jr. and Man of Steel's Diane Lane in Chaplin.

Attenborough also directed A Chorus Line and appeared in the original Doctor Doolittle, among many others.

U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron issued a statement calling Attenborough "one of the greats of cinema."

"His acting in Brighton Rock was brilliant, his directing of Gandhi was stunning," Cameron said.
