Oz the Great and Powerful box office

So far in 2013, there has yet to be a single movie to have a $100 million opening weekend box office. However, that could change this weekend, as many are predicting that Oz the Great and Powerful will rake in between $80 million and $100 million during its opening weekend. Last night, Oz the Great and Powerful took in $2 million during its early Thursday night opening. While $2 million might seem low compared to superhero summer blockbusters, it's actually quite an impressive number for a March opening of a movie targeting kids and families. While some are forecasting a conservative $75 to $80 million due to the rather slow box office so far this year, we think the recent box office decline is due to there not being much of general interest at the movies yet this year. In fact, we're predicting that Oz the Great and Powerful will actually benefit from the lackluster films trend, and families will turn out in droves over the weekend for a movie featuring a story and characters they are familiar with. We think Oz the Great and Powerful has a good chance at exceeding $100 million in its opening weekend. Of course, it won't break the opening weekend box office record for March though. The Hunger Games currently holds the record with $152,535,747 and that record is pretty much untouchable due to The Hunger Games strong midnight opening.
