Transformers: Age of Extinction is now the highest grossing film of all time at the Chinese box office, with $222.74 million earned, dethroning the former top-spot holder, Avatar, which brought in 221.9 million.

It's worth noting that these numbers do not account for the inflation in ticket prices since Avatar was released in 2009.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is currently doing better in China than it is doing in the United States, where it has grossed about $175.4 million. Age of Extinction went out of its way to appeal to Chinese audiences by moving its third act to Hong Kong, casting multiple Chinese film stars, including Li Bingbing and Han Beng, and including a scene of a Chinese official bravely ordering that the Chinese military be sent to defend Hong Kong, even though said military never actually shows up in the film.

Transformers: Age of Extinction also has several Chinese financial partners, but some of those relationships have turned sour. Pangu threatened to sue Paramount for how its Pangu Tower complex was displayed in the movie, though a last minute deal was struck, and another company, Chongqing, is considering legal action for not receiving enough exposure in the film.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is now playing in theaters worldwide.
