At least, that’s what it appears to be as of Friday, where the much buzzed about film came out of the gate with just $4 million. Before those numbers came in, estimates for the weekend were looking quite nice at $21 million, but unless the turnout significantly increases, the film will only hit about $10 million once the opening weekend commences (via Variety).
The good news is that it only cost Lionsgate about $5 million to make, so it’s not like they’ll lose their shirts in the deal.
The third entry in the Bridget Jones series, Bridget Jones’s Baby, opened up to similar numbers, putting it below Blair Witch at 3 million, alongside the Joseph Gordon-Levitt vehicle Snowden. Both films are expected to bring in about $9 million when the weekend concludes.
That leaves Tom Hank’s Sully as the clear winner in its second week in theaters, as it brought in another $6.6 million on Friday. The film is expected to hit around $21 million when the final numbers come in. Sully brought in $35 million on its opening weekend.
The biggest story here though is the disconnect between Blair Witch and general audiences, which seemed to have a great deal of momentum going into the weekend. Originally the film was titled The Woods, and only later was it revealed that it was indeed a Blair Witch entry. The film is directed by Adam Wingard.
