The Hunger Games franchise continues to catch fire and shows no sign of cooling off anytime soon.

As previously anticipated its latest installment, Mockingjay Pt. 1, has surpassed Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy to become the highest grossing U.S. film released in 2014.

In Mockingjay pt. 1, Katniss Everdeen finds herself in District 13 after she destroys the games. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.

According to Box Office Mojo, Mockingjay's total domestic gross now stands at $333,180,638 after Wednesday's box office numbers. Guardians has dropped into second place with $333,172,112.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is in third with $259,766,572. The LEGO Movie ($257,760,692) and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies ($246,448,344) round out the top five highest grossing 2014 domestic films.
