If you are a fan of Power Rangers, then you may or may not be familiar with its predecessor Super Sentai. The latter show debuted in Japan back in 1975. The first show Himitsu Sentai Gorenger kicked off the long-running franchise before it gained international popularity with Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger. Saban Entertainment took that series and transformed it into what fans know as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but the deal was a quiet one. Since then, Toei Studios and Saban have had little interaction, but that is all about to change. Next month, the new Super Sentai series will debut in Japan, and its creators finally consulted Power Rangers executives for the first time.

Toei is not working directly with the producers of Power Rangers but its merchandiser instead. The team talked with Bandai of America according to the company's former marketing executive Greg Mitchell. Speaking with No Pink Spandex, the insider said that Toei wanted input on the design of Super Sentai's robotic and toy elements.

"We got brought in pretty early on and got to hear what the creative pitch for the show was, which was a space zodiac cosmos type of thing which we get excited about," he said.

"[Bandai America] got to help at the conceptual stage to think about what could the zords be, what could the weaponry be, what would be the Ranger Key or Dino Charger?"

Apparently, Bandai of America was also asked to get input on the 2017 Super Sentai series, Uchu Sentai Kyuranger. The company suggested that Toei look to superheroes like Captain America when they are sourcing costume inspiration.

"Think about Captain America. He used to wear red white and blue spandex. His costume became more cool and tactical looking. He aged up the look of a classic hero. We were constantly bring up examples like that never to undermine what makes Power Rangers Power Rangers but to say, let us help to form the shape of Power Rangers as respectively as possible to make it competitive as possible in the US."

If you are not familiar with the new show, then you can jump into the Super Sentai fandom at any time. The upcoming series will be the franchise's 41st, and it will differ from its predecessors in a few big ways. Uchu Sentai Kyuranger is set to use star signs, constellations, and other means of astrology as inspiration. The new Super Sentai series is set to have nine heroes collected into its superhero squad. The number is a rather daunting one as previous teams have only hosted 3-5 five members initially, but Uchu Sentai Kyuranger is going all-out.
