Fans are still rocking out to the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, which used classic rock to help tell the story throughout the film. Every song was carefully chosen by James Gunn, the writer and director, and he would even pipe it through speakers on set while the actors were bringing his words to life. It's essential to the way the movie plays out, and thus it is little surprise that the sequel will similarly link classic rock songs to the scenes on the screen. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 starts early on with "Awesome Mix Vol. 2."
"It's all off the tape," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed to Comicbook.com and other press during a set visit last year. The music for "Awesome Mix Vol. 2," which Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) finally unwrapped from his mother at the end of the first film, was given to Feige on a CD alongside the original treatment of the film, so James Gunn clearly had these exact songs in mind while writing it. But it's taking a more active role, as far as the rest of the team is concerned
"The other Guardians now know that music is a thing for Peter [Quill, Star-Lord], so in early scenes you see Baby Groot setting up these little outerspace speakers so that the music can play for all of them, because Quill likes to hear music when he's fighting," Feige said. Scientific? Not so much, but certainly a lot of fun. "So, it does go to more than just his headset."
Feige said that the music's increased presence is accompanied by it's increased importance, especially lyrically.
"I would say that a couple of the songs, and particularly one song has very unique lyrics that play in much more specifically into the plot than any song did in the first film," he teased. The only song we know for sure is in the movie at this point is "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac, so start analyzing its lyrics from now until May.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
