James Gunn Got All The Songs He Wanted In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

One of the things that made Guardians of the Galaxy so unique - and catchy - amongst the Marvel and superhero landscape, was the soundtrack. Go ahead, try listening to "Hooked on a Feeling" or "I'm Not In Love" now, having seen that movie, and not think about their context in the film. Heck, if you don't dance enthusiastically like Star-Lord when you hear "Come and Get Your Love," something's probably wrong with you.

While we don't know much about the music of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which will of course be heard from Star-Lord's tape, "Awesome Mix Vol. 2," though "The Chain" and "Come a Little Bit Closer" appeared in San Diego Comic-Con footage and will probably be on it, we do know that every song we hear in the film will be writer-director James Gunn's first choice, and the ones he wrote into the script itself.

"We've cleared all the songs that were in the script," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Comicbook.com and other reporters during a set visit last spring. "You don't actually pay for them until you cut the movie together and decide. If you use the first movie as a track record, every song, maybe one or two songs came out of the movie that were, that had been in the script, for length more than anything else, but we'll probably end up using the vast majority of them, and certainly the ones that play into the plot and dialogue are in."

Yes, completists, that means there are a couple of "lost" Awesome Mix. Vol. 1 tracks out there, too. We'll have plenty new to listen to when Guardians of the Galaxy rolls out in theaters this spring.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn (Slither). The film marks the return of the original Guardians, including Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) as Peter Quill/Star-Lord; Zoe Saldana (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Gamora; Dave Bautista (Spectre) as Drax; Vin Diesel (Furious 7) as the voice of Groot; Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket; Michael Rooker (Jumper) as Yondu; Karen Gillan (The Big Short) as Nebula; and Sean Gunn (Gilmore Girls) as Kraglin. New cast members include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Everest), Chris Sullivan (The Knick, The Drop) and Kurt Russell (The Hateful Eight, The Thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
