A new update has just launched for the PlayStation 4, and will likely prompt once you turn your system on and try to connect online. It's a pretty small update, with not too many features attached to it, but it has a general note that indicates it's still important.

According to the notes provided by Sony, the update, numbered 4.71, comes with a "system software update" which "improves the quality of the system performance." Again, there's not too much of a technical breakdown in terms of what that entails exactly, but perhaps we'll see how these subtle differences play out once we download the update and see how it applies to the system in general over the next few days.

That doesn't indicate we'll see any changes in how the games run. In fact, it should be business as usual when it comes to your favorite gaming sessions, with nary a difference. However, on the technical side of things, it could mean anything, from balancing out fan use to making sure things are up and running online.

This isn't the first time that Sony has provided a small update to the PlayStation 4. The last one, numbered 4.70, only provided some little improvements here and there, but nothing major, like the support of external hard drives, which came earlier this year.

Granted, we don't expect significant changes, so it's not a big deal. And the update is pretty much free, so you don't have to worry about it taking a chunk out of your wallet or anything like that. As mentioned above, it won't take that long to download, and then you can continue on your merry little way as you enjoy game sessions.

As far as when the next big update will arrive, it's hard to tell. There aren't too many issues to address on the PlayStation 4 at the moment, and until they arise, Sony will probably just continue to make small tweaks to keep things flowing smoothly. We'll let you know if any big changes are on the horizon, but, for now, download and get back to the games you love. We'll see you there!
