A Pixar-Marvel Movie Not So Farfetched, Says John Lasseter

In a new interview at Collider promoting Disney-Pixar’s upcoming release Brave, studio head John Lasseter seems to put a more positive spin on the prospect of a Marvel-Pixar animated feature than we’ve heard yet from anyone on the Pixar side.

Asked about the possibility of importing Marvel’s superheroes into the Pixar stable, or at least making a feature-length animated film with Lasseter’s involvement, the filmmaker answered, “Well, I can’t say anything about that because Marvel just got—[they’ve] been a couple years as part of the Disney company, we’ve been six years as part of the Disney company. And at Pixar, we stay focused on making original films. Even our sequels are kind of created internally and we come up with ideas [on our own]. I’m also leading the Walt Disney Animation Studio and all of that. These studios are filmmaker driven studios, so if a filmmaker comes to me and says, ‘Hey, I wanna do this,’ then I would be really open to it.”

Back in April, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed rumors that Disney Animation or Pixar–which are both run by Lasseter–might be interested in making a Marvel film. He seemed at the time to suggest that Disney Animation, not Pixar, was the more likely home of a movie because Pixar was “doing their own thing.”

There is, of course, an existing relationship between Marvel and Pixar, even if it’s only a small one. Back in March, the publisher started making Toy Story comics, filling a market void left by the end of Pixar’s relationship with Boom! Studios, who had been making all-ages books based on a number of Disney properties before the House that Mickey Built ever bought the House of Ideas.

So–if it were to happen, what Marvel character would you like to see animated in a Pixar film? I’m rooting for Rocket Raccoon.
