Young Avengers Wins GLAAD Media Award For Outstanding Comic Book

Marvel Comics' Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles has been honored with the 2014 GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book. The GLAAD Media Awards annually recognizes the best portrayals of LGBT characters across various forms of media, including comics, television, film and more. "With Young Avengers, thanks to the work of Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung in its creation, we had an incredible opportunity to push these themes even more prominently," says series writer Kieron Gillen. "The response from the people who the book spoke to has been absolutely humbling. Receiving the award continues that particular theme. We're both lucky and grateful." Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung created the Young Avengers, including the fan favorite, homosexual couple, Wiccan and Hulking. Gillen and company also introduced Prodigy and Miss America Chavez, two more gay characters, to the team's roster. Other nominees in the category included Marvel's Fearless Defenders, DC Comics' Batwoman, Archie Comics' Life with Archie, and Dark Horse Comics' Husbands. The entire run of Young Avengers is now available digitally and in three trade paperback volumes.
