The Flash's Teddy Sears on the Zoom/Caitlin Relationship and This Week's Twist Ending

Warning: Spoilers ahead for tonight's episode of The Flash, titled "Versus Zoom."

On tonight's episode of The Flash, we got a double-whammy of an ending. After abducting Wally, Zoom (the true identity of the man previously believed to be Jay Garrick) convinced Barry to surrender his speed to save his brother's life.

After he did, he disappeared -- with Caitlin Snow in tow.

Last week, we had a chance to speak with Teddy Sears, who plays Zoom, to ask him about that ending.

So, first off: was anything between Caitlin and Zolomon real, or was it all part of his plot?

Yes, that was all real, which of course makes it very interesting when something like this happens that's not part of a plan. It's a very sort of fun thing to play with as an actor and to see as an audience. We have Jay Garrick arriving and he's essentially been playing every member of S.T.A.R. Labs, getting them on his side, and convincing them that he is who he says he is, and he's a man who can be trusted.

I will say that Jay, or really Hunter Zolomon, is here on Earth-1 for a very specific reason, which will be revealed in this upcoming episode. But one thing that wasn't fake, the one thing that wasn't planned, the one thing about that was 100% authentic was this connection that he had with Caitlin Snow, real feelings, real emotions, and that plays into why he makes off with her at the end, and will begin to fill it out a little bit.

Actually, I know we will get to explore it for sure, but a little bit in the next episode, the next new episode, and a little after that. I think maybe the next few. I can't remember the order of when we shot things, but yeah, that was real.

It's interesting to me because in the other reality, he knew and worked with both her and her husband. Then essentially the event brought you here in this world is what killed Ronnie. To me, it's almost like, on a very one-sided level for you, it's a kind of psychologically complex relationship, but as for her, it's very much like something that happened.

Right, right, right. Yeah, just to dovetail that, he finds himself on Earth-1. He's a stranger in a strange land and he finds his way into S.T.A.R. Labs, and it was an unanticipated event that he would connect with anybody, let alone this woman who, herself, is a stranger in a strange land having been newly widowed after Ronnie's death.

The fact that the very event that killed Ronnie is the thing that propels him to come here ... Well, the thing ... It was very the breach opening, sort of like an invitation and we will get into that more and more. You're right, there's this whole other additional psychological level that sort of exists between them -- but not that she knows about, of course.
