Missions are a relatively new addition to League of Legends, and after players have had the chance to test out several quest variations, those who worked on the design of the missions have shared their thoughts on the strong and weak parts of missions thus far.

Beginning with the VS. mission that pitted Yasuo and Riven against each other in a champion vs. champion showdown, several more missions have been revealed for different occasions. The release of more Omega Squad skins as well as adding Kayn to League are just two examples, and after many missions have been completed, Riot says that the effects have been overall positive despite some objections to the way certain missions require players to play.

"Our number one priority is to do no harm (because League doesn't need missions to be fun)," Riot Revenancer said. "That said, we want to make the most fun missions we can. You'll continue to occasionally see missions testing new boundaries that we're pretty confident in, but we'll always be ready to cut something off if it's hurting players."

As players completed the missions, the way that the missions' goals were achieved was monitored to make sure the missions weren't having a negative impact on the game. According to the data they collected, players seemed to be having quite a bit of fun completing missions without having to alter their playstyles too much to obtain the rewards. At most, those who looked at the data noticed an increase in both AI and normal games that players used to quickly fulfill the mission requirements.

That being said, there were several failures and successes that were identified by the team as areas that either need to be worked on or kept intact. Found below are three observations about both categories that were provided by Revenancer.

FAILS:

  • Missions that require you to play a particular queue you don't normally play (the daily mission to play a game of ARAM was easily the most disliked in VS.)
  • Missions requiring you to play specific champs (Kayn) feel bad when players aren't particularly interested in playing that champ
  • Missions that are particularly hard to complete if you play a certain role

SUCCESSES:

  • Missions to win games
  • Missions to get kills and assists
  • Playing with (not necessarily as) a specific champion in your game

The latest missions to go live are the Arcade-themed challenges that are currently underway, missions that focus on getting gold and netting kills/assists, something that any champ can hope to do. These mission designs are likely a product of the above observations, and assuming they're received well, future missions will likely follow suit.
