You guys! Capcom is bringing back Puzzle Fighter, the beloved fighting / puzzle game mash-up that made an incredibly impactful debut on the PlayStation decades ago. Capcom's Vancouver studio has developed the game from the ground up for mobile, and it will be available to download for free on iOS and Android devices later this year. You can check out the announcement trailer above!

The character designs have been a little divisive for fans. Some people turned away as soon as they saw that the game was going to mobile, while I happen to think that it makes a lot of sense. The character models, though, are a little harder to defend. What the heck is going on with Mega Man?! The gameplay is all that matters, though, and we'll get to get our hands on this one soon. From the official press release:

"Puzzle Fighter features an outstanding roster of legendary characters and stages from popular Capcom franchises. Fan-favorites such as Ryu, Ken or Chun-Li (Street Fighter), X (Mega Man), Morrigan (Darkstalkers), Frank West (Dead Rising) and more come to life with VO and cinematic special moves. Players pick one main character each with their own strengths and benefits, to face-off in explosive gem-crushing action.

"In addition, two assist characters can be chosen to further enhance the abilities of the main character. Simple to learn but deep in strategy, this highly addictive puzzle game has players strategically building up gems and destroying them to unleash epic combos that can knock out their opponent. Thrilling real-time versus battles, rewarding single player options and an array of content to unlock await in this ultimate puzzle fight!"

We're cautiously optimistic about this one. Puzzle Fighter has been a fan-favorite for a very long time, and this new entry is risk-free since you get to download it for free. If Capcom ponies up some actual support for the game after launch, we could get into this. Stay tuned.
