Sometimes you come across these little gems that show you just what gaming skill is all about. It could be a level in Super Mario Maker that challenges you in all the right ways; sometimes it can be a homemade game that's so devious that you can't help but wonder what the developer was up to.

That's what we're thinking with Trap Adventure 2 – Furious Mutant Gate Wrap Adventure. Initially released for mobile devices back in 2016, this Hiroyoshi Oshiba offering looks deceptively simple, like a platforming game from the 8-bit era. And, for good measure, it has the graphics and music that match the era almost perfectly, like something that was programmed by Capcom or Konami.

But just a few seconds into the game, you've got a good idea of what you're in for. Here's a good example – the first part of the stage involves three platforms that sit in a staircase-like set-up. So you just go up them and get to the other side, right? Nope, spikes suddenly appear on the third block up, and if you step on them, you lose a life.

Oh, but that's just the beginning. If you decide to just avoid that platform, it actually comes jumping at you, and eventually falls as you try to get back to where you started. And if that's not bad enough, the area where you were suddenly closes down on you and ends your life anyway.

This is just a small sample of what to expect from a game such as this, as you can see in the video below. There are solutions to each stage available, but you'll have to think outside the box in order to figure them out, lest you end up losing one of your many lives.

The video only lasts a minute and a half, and really only gives you a glimpse of part of the first level, but, yeah, it's crazy. And the challenges just keep on coming, as you can find full playthroughs on YouTube, like the one below.

It may take a bit of legwork to download this game, but it's definitely worth a look if you feel you're up for all sorts of challenges. If not, hey, just stick with playing Super Mario Odyssey like the rest of us.
