X-Men: Death Of X Reveals First Mutant Death By Terrigen

For some time now, fans have been left to speculate about what Cyclops did to become so vilified amongst both the mutant and the Inhuman communities. In Death of X #1, the first step to solving that mystery takes place, and it means the end of a fan-favorite.

Spoilers from here on out, so if you haven't read the issue yet, feel free to pause and go do so now.

Death of X #1 takes readers back to 1 year ago, as Cyclops and what's left of his Uncanny X-Men head towards a distress call from Muir Island. At the same time, Crystal and her squad of Inhumans are releasing another cloud of Terrigen Mists upon a city, hoping to kickstart a few more members of their growing family. Muri Island has a similar mist, but the research facility is empty aside from a few dead bodies.

As they are leaving the facility, Emma Frost senses a presence nearby, and the team stumbles upon the multiple decaying bodies of former X-Factor leader Jamie Madrox. After finding the original Madrox amongst the bodies, Jamie informs Cyclops about what took out the facility.

"No, you don't understand Scott...the Mist...it's the Terrigen Mist. We--we figured it out way too late. The Terrigen Mist did this."

Jamie doesn't last long after those words, and the Terrigen Mists claim their first mutant victim. Cyclops and Emma head back into the facility to find proof, and even Hank McCoy, who is still not on the best of terms with Scott, gives things a once over remotely and confirms their suspicions.

It's here that Scott makes his mission statement, knocking over the first domino in the impending Inhuman and Mutant war.

"The Terrigen is loose. It can reach every mutant on earth. There is no safe place. To the Inhumans, Terrigen is life. But to us...it is death. I will not accept that. I will do whatever it takes, whatever it takes to save our people. As of this moment, we are at war. We are mutants...we protect our own."

It appears as if Scott might have been right after all, and it will be interesting to see how things play out from here. As of right now, Scott has a valid case, but no one knows what extremes he will decide to take that to.
