The team that brought you Image's God Country is heading over to Marvel to write Thanos. It was announced today at Marvel's Next Big Thing panel in San Diego that Donny Cates will be handed the reins to the book from Jeff Lemire. The Paybacks Geoff Shaw will be doing the art. Not that Thanos isn't already a dark character (I mean he does commit genocide from time to time) but it sounds like Cates is going to darker: "I keep coming up with ideas that are just so darkly brutal, I just understand him as a character and as a god. I just keep pushing and pushing and pushing."

Donny Cates yesterday was announced as a Marvel exclusive talent. Cates said in a press release from Marvel:

"I've wanted to write for Marvel since I was a little kid, so the opportunity to come into this incredible world and play with all of these amazing characters is a dream come true for me..."

One of Cates first tasks beyond Thanos will be writing replacing the Sorcerer Supreme. Loki will be taking the helm from Doctor Strange as Marvel Legacy relaunches.
